Nag Panchami, a traditional Hindu festival, is observed on the fifth day of Shukla Paksha (the waxing phase of the moon) in the month of Shravan. This day is dedicated to the worship of snakes, a practice rooted in ancient scriptures and folklore. Snake worship is believed to bring protection from snake bites and other evils. According to ancient scriptures, snake worship is done on the fifth day of Shukla Paksha of Shravan month every year. This day is known as Nagpanchami.
Naga Panchami is celebrated by worshipping Naga, cobras, and snakes by offering milk, sweets, flowers, lamps, and even sacrifices. Naga and serpent deities made from silver, stone, wood, or wall paintings undergo a ritual bath with water and milk before being worshipped by reciting Mantras.There is a rule of eating food once with this fast.
According to Drik Panchang, this year the Naga Panchami Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Sawan month will start on 9 August 2024 at 8:15 AM and will end on the next day i.e. 10 August 2024 at 06:09 AM. Therefore, according to Udayatithi, Nag Panchami will be celebrated on 9 August 2024
According to Bhavishya Purana, it is beneficial to worship by chanting the following mantra on the day of Nagpanchami.
Mantras for snake worship on Nagpanchami:-
पहला मंत्र-
ॐ भुजंगेशाय विद्महे,
सर्पराजाय धीमहि,
तन्नो नाग: प्रचोदयात्।।
दूसरा मंत्र :-
‘सर्वे नागा: प्रीयन्तां मे ये केचित् पृथ्वीतले।
ये च हेलिमरीचिस्था ये न्तरे दिवि संस्थिता:।।
ये नदीषु महानागा ये सरस्वतिगामिन:।
ये च वापीतडागेषु तेषु सर्वेषु वै नम:।।’
तीसरा मंत्र-
अनन्तं वासुकिं शेषं पद्मनाभं च कम्बलम्।
शंखपालं धार्तराष्ट्रं तक्षकं कालियं तथा॥
एतानि नव नामानि नागानां च महात्मनाम्।
सायंकाले पठेन्नित्यं प्रात: काले विशेषत:।
तस्मै विषभयं नास्ति सर्वत्र विजयी भवेत्॥
Meaning of Naga Panchami mantra:
Wherever the snake god is present in the entire sky, earth, heaven, lakes, tap-wells, sun rays etc. May they remove all our sorrows and give us a happy and peaceful life. Our salute to all of them again and again.
By chanting this mantra every morning and evening, a person is not afraid of poison and gets victory everywhere from all four directions.
During Nag Panchami, devotees offer milk, flowers, and sweets to images or representations of snakes. Temples dedicated to serpent deities, such as those of Lord Shiva (often associated with snakes), are thronged with worshippers. It is also customary to draw snake images on walls and floors using rice flour, and these images are worshipped with prayers and offerings. The festival serves as a reminder of the harmonious coexistence between humans and nature, emphasizing respect and reverence for all creatures.
On the day of Nag Panchami, certain food and drinks are consumed and some are also avoided. Its purpose is to please the snake gods and maintain physical and spiritual purity. Let’s know what to eat and what not to eat
