Long ago, a Brahmin lived in a village with his wife and seven sons. All sons were married, and the family was very prosperous and happy.

One day, the youngest daughter-in-law was cleaning the house and unknowingly poured hot water into a snake’s burrow while washing the floor. A young snake living inside got burned and died. That snake was the son of the Snake King (Naag Raj).

Hearing of his son’s death, the Nag King became very angry and decided to take revenge. That night, the Snake King entered the Brahmin’s house and bit all the family members, except the youngest daughter-in-law, who was fasting and worshipping Lord Shiva and the Nag Devta with full devotion.

The Nag King came to bite her too but saw her deep devotion. He was moved and said, “I will not bite you because of your true faith and purity. Ask for a boon.”

The woman fell at his feet and begged, “Please bring my husband and family back to life.”

Pleased with her prayers and devotion, the Snake King revived her entire family and blessed her. From that day, the tradition of Naga Panchami was born, and people began worshipping snakes with milk, flowers, and offerings to seek their blessings and avoid their anger.

Naga Panchami Pooja Vidhi

The rules for worshiping Nag Panchami are different for everyone and there are many types of beliefs. A type of Naga Panchami Puja ritual is given here.

• First thing in the morning is to get up before sunrise and take bath. Clean clothes are worn.
• Everyone has different rules for eating, and Bhoga is chewed accordingly.
• Dal Bati is made in many households. Kheer Puri is made here for many people. Making rice here is considered wrong by many people.
• Many families do not light the stove on this day, hence the rule is to eat stale food in their homes. In this way each person prepares the Bhoga in his own way.
• After this, the area is purified by placing ocher, a special stone, on the wall of the house for worship. This wall is the entrance to many people’s homes and the wall of many people’s kitchens. A square box is made on this small piece with a kajal-like coating made of charcoal and ghee. Small snakes are made inside this khana. It is worshiped by making such a figure.
• In many families, the shape of this snake is made on paper.
• Many families make a shape of a snake out of sandalwood at the entrance of the house and worship it.
• After this pooja, snake charmers are brought into the houses whose token is a snake without teeth and their venom is removed. He is worshipped. They are offered milk and food by offering Akshat, flower, kumkum.
• It is customary to feed snakes with milk on this day. Donations are also made to snake charmers.
• Many people release the snake from its charms on this day.
• Bambi is also seen on this day. Bambi is home to the snake. Which is made of clay and has small holes in it. It looks like a mound.
